Local street artists in Australia are putting a spin into mattresses that are found discarded on the streets. The are making use of these as canvas, painting on it and creating masterpieces and then put on display. To date, there have been about a dozen mattresses turned into fabulous art pieces in exhibition, attracting a lot of attention from passers by.
These mattresses are found on Pierce Ave, Roys Road and near Wildhorse Mountain.
The latest displays are especially attention grabbing because it comes with a big sign that alerts all those who see the display to report illegal dumpers to the police. According to the police, they’ve been doing what they can to stop these dumpers by patrolling certain areas. But they are also curious about the identity of the artist…or artists, particularly because graffiti is also considered an offense.
The artist(s) doing these creative work does not want to be named. But news reporters do not seem to have a hard time getting a hold of the person, and even got a quote from him:
“I thought about how someone had a personal relationship on this mattress. They slept on it. They cried on it. They loved on it. Then, when they get a new one, they chuck it away just to save a couple of bucks. I first started painting them with faces of aged people because its kind of what we do with our elderly people – use them up and chuck them away. Then I took the concept a little bit further because we do that with the mentally ill as well.”
