coconut mattress fiber is most likely dangerous because this is an element that lights up with fire and spreads easily.
But in countries like Sri Lanka, it’s the main component for rubberized mattresses, pads, upholstery, insulating material, packing materials mattress.
Although, to their credit, the fiber has to pass moisture content standards.
Coir fiber posses an inherent moisture content which correlates to its natural properties, particularly the flexibility of fibre strands. The Sri Lanka standards (SLS) indicated a moisture content maximum of 18% unless otherwise agreed upon between buyer and seller. Other than moisture content the fibre should be free from husk particles and foreign matter.

Wool Mattress From Snugfleece
0 Comments Published by Lilian May 8th, 2008 in MATTRESS News, MATTRESS Shopping.Made from 100% American virgin wool, SnugFleece Woolens’ products offer superb craftsmanship and a “hands-on” quality that is not found elsewhere. The SnugFleece Original and SnugFleece II mattress covers are constructed one row at a time, through a unique process that secures the wool to a cotton backing in its natural upright position. Because the crimp of the fibers remains intact, it stays lofty and resists compression. For the SnugFleece Deluxe, Elite or Imperial the wool is knitted through a durable polyester backing that allows the added convenience of machine washing.

Why a wool mattress is perfect:
- It acts as a thermostat that helps condition and regulate the temperature of your body. When it’s cold, it traps heat in your body, keeping you warm; when its hot, it absorbs your sweat while you are sleeping on the bed.
- It is made of natural materials that lets the bed “breathe”.
- It is best for any season.
- Its very soft fabric allows you to sleep comfortably.

Ditching your conventional mattress for a green mattress
0 Comments Published by Lilian March 28th, 2008 in MATTRESS News. Are you still using a pre-2004 mattress? Are you considering buying a new one? Would you still get a traditional one or have you been eyeing a new green mattress?
Should you ditch your old mattress in favor of a new, “eco-friendly” type?
It’s hard to say whether you should ditch your conventional bed in favor of a green one, since you’ll likely have a tough time figuring out exactly which toxins are lurking under your covers. Take, for example, fireproofing chemicals: Pentabde, a member of the polybrominated diphenyl ether (pbde) family of flame retardants, was used in some mattresses before 2004, when it was phased out. (Pentabde is now known to be toxic to the liver, thyroid, and nervous system.) So let’s say that just to be on the safe side you toss your pre-2004 mattress and buy a new one. Problem solved? Maybe not. Last July, the Consumer Product Safety Commission began to require that all mattresses sold in the United States be able to withstand 30 minutes of exposure to an open flame.

Bed bunks for South Africa
2 Comments Published by Lilian March 27th, 2008 in MATTRESS Frame, MATTRESS Kids, MATTRESS News. Here’s the solution to living space situation in South Africa — bed bunks stacked over each other, like apartment buildings.

The bed accommodates single mattresses each and when not in use as a sleeping space it could be a seating option, much like sofas. An orphanage in Wellington, South Africa already makes use of this.
The design idea won the Red Dot Award last year.
