Nine Facts About Sleeping on Used Mattresses
0 Comments Published by Lilian July 9th, 2008 in MATTRESS News.Ewww to these facts below! I bet most people don’t give this much thought…
1. Every person loses an average of 250ml of perspiration every night. If you share your mattress with someone, this increases to around 500ml. Even if the mattress is only five years old, this is equivalent to 900 litres of personal fluids
2. Every person sheds and re-grows skin cells every 27 days.
3. By the age of 70, the average person will have lost 50kg of skin. (A large portion ends up in our mattresses.)
4. Dust mites are microscopic spiders that live in our houses. The main component of dust is shed skin flakes, which is the mite’s preferred food. Areas around the home that are heavily used, such as beds and upholstered furniture, will have much higher mite populations than the rest of the house.
5. Dust mites don’t bite. Their bodies, secretions and faeces contain particular proteins that can trigger allergic symptoms in susceptible people. Old mattresses may contain several kilo- grams of dust mite excrement and dust mite carcasses.
6. 10% of the Australian population suffers from asthma.
7. Dust mite secretions and excrement are closely related to asthma and eczema.
8. Old mattresses, pillows and quilts also contain high amounts of bacteria and fungi.
9. A by-product of bacteria is called an endotoxin, which can bring on asthma attacks. Old Pillows and mattresses also may contain millions of fungi spores.
I read about this on Wenatex, an Australian company which conducts seminars on sleeping care and sleeping healthy.

Dunlopillo No Squeak Mattress
1 Comment Published by Lilian July 5th, 2008 in MATTRESS Shopping, Memory Foam Mattress. The Dunlopillo mattress is made of latex, there are no springs, ergo, it doesn’t squeak. But what sets it apart from every other type of latex mattress in the market? A Better Bed lists down 10 reasons and some if the benefits of this mattress are:
- Latex is hypo-allergenic and its anti-microbial properties inhibit the growth of common bacteria and mildew - so it can be particularly beneficial for asthma sufferers.
- Mattresses do not need to be turned, as there are little or no subsidiary fillings to settle or pack-down.
- Silent in use with nothing in the mattress to squeak or creak.
- Independent support means you can move more freely without disturbing your partner.

Official Statement from Select Comfort
1 Comment Published by Lilian May 20th, 2008 in MATTRESS News.
Following up on yesterday’s news regarding the Class Action Suit filed against Select Comfort, here’s an official statement they have released via the media outfit, Consumer Watch:
Consumer Watch: Select Comfort reformulated their foam in 2005 because of the problem with mold. Why didn’t Select Comfort notify customers who had purchased the beds prior to 2005?
Select Comfort: It’s important that your viewers know Select Comfort does not have a “problem with mold.” It is a rare occurrence. It’s also important to know that mold is not a product defect and can occur in ANY mattress or upholstered product under the right circumstances.
There is ABSOLUTELY NO EVIDENCE that mold has ever occurred more frequently in a Sleep Number bed than other mattresses and upholstered products.
However, we do understand that because consumers have the benefit of opening up our beds, we’re held to a higher standard. So, Select Comfort has been — and continues to be — an industry leader in employing the latest available technologies to deter the growth of mold.
Select Comfort has always treated parts of its Sleep Number bed with an antimicrobial agent. As part of its efforts to continuously improve the product, in 2005 the company used new technology to enhance its antimicrobial formulation. Although the incident of mold in our products was rare prior to the enhancement, according to our data, there have been 0 confirmed cases of mold in a Sleep Number bed sold after the antimicrobial reformulation in 2005.
CW: Do you intend on notifying customers now that a class action lawsuit has been filed?
SC: At this time, we’re not going to publicly comment on pending litigation.
CW: What should customers with this problem do?
SC: Our customer is our no. 1 priority. If ANY customer has any issue with their Sleep Number bed, they should contact customer service. It is our policy to do everything possible to remedy the situation, which includes replacing components of the bed, replacing the entire bed, or offering a full refund. If any customer has an issue, we urge them to call Select Comfort Customer Service at (800) 472-7185.
We’d also like to offer a few more pieces of information to help inform your viewers about mold.
The Sleep Number bed actually may help people avoid or address mold issues. Unlike other mattresses, the Sleep Number bed can easily be cleaned up by unzipping the cover.
All key components of the Sleep Number bed — including foam, air chambers, and fabrics — are treated with a proprietary anti-microbial agent to deter the growth of mold, mildew, and bacteria.

Pillows Plus Protector
0 Comments Published by Lilian May 16th, 2008 in MATTRESS Accessories, MATTRESS News.
For users of memory foam mattresses, the feedback has been the lack of proper ventilation and one ends up sweating while in sleep. A pillow top protector is perhaps most effective in repelling moisture and body fluids, and thus keeping the sleep area fresh and hygienic, more importantly.
This Pillow Plus mattress protector is a good combination for such visco foam mattresses. According to its distributor, this one is made of stretchable materials with technologically advanced fabric.
For protection against moisture, stains, urine and sweat, dust mites and bacteria. It’s washable with no ironing needed, so caring for it is easy and hassle-free.
