Memory foam contains gel-like polyurethane material, which is what gives that consistency and surface. First use in hospitals in the 80’s it was introduced to the public a decade after. When manufacturers saw the potential market, they too decided to make more versions. Hence, on top of regular mattresses, one can now purchase memory foam toppers or pads for that added firmness and comfort.
Things to note about memory foam mattress pads:
It has to be broken into by sleeping on it without covers for a few days.
Because of its gel-like component, it is easily adaptable to the temperature. It can heat up, thereby making sleep uncomfortable during humid days. For this, you will need sheets to cover the pads. For colder nights, you can try warming your pads with electric blanket.
You will also need covers to protect it from wear, tear, accidents and spills. Make sure you get a water-resistant polymer.
