Fixing squeaky beds

Squeaking beds, which can be a very disturbing thing, especially when you are catching up on sleep, may be caused by of any of these:

  • unstable spring compression
  • the metal or wood may lack lubrication
  • lopsided mattress
  • headboard not set in place
  • Essortment has a good number of tips you can try to remedy this.

First, unscrew the headboard and footboard and then carefully reassemble the bed. When putting the mattress back on, be sure that it is centered. Often, a lopsided mattress puts too much pressure on one side of the bed, resulting in squeaking springs. The springs are meant to withstand evenly distributed weight, and when this balance is off, a squeak is almost sure to follow.

After eliminating a centering or weight distribution issue, the next trick to try is tightening any remaining bolts, screws, hinges, etc. A loose screw in the frame of the bed can cause sagging in the springs, resulting in unstable spring compression. If your squeak is the result of a loose fitting, your problem will be solved in less than five minutes! Routine tightening of bolts, screws, hinges, etc is a good idea to avoid future squeaking.

If you’ve still got a squeak after centering and tightening, you’ll need to spray some cooking oil on the squeaking spring or springs. In most cases, this will stop the squeak immediately. Over time, the lubrication from the spray will wear off, and reapplication may be necessary. Also, lubricating the springs with a bar of soap, candles, or paraffin wax may work. You can experiment with any or all of these products and determine what works best for your particular squeak.
