Off-gassing: The Memory Foam Dilemma

by Lilian on Saturday, October 13th, 2007

While memory foam appears to be the best mattress around, it is far from perfect. Some users have complained of its nasty smell, especially from people with hypersensitive senses. Purchasing a memory foam may now seem like a wrong decision. The dilemma is known as off-gassing (chemical release).

Does this lead to something serious? No known scientific research proves that it is. But if you are one of those slightly put off by the smell, airing it outside may help lessen the problem. Sometimes, the smell bothers one person more than the other, so how long you leave the memory foam outside for airing, should depend on your sensitivities.

Also, consider the room where the memory foam is. Is it small and enclosed? Is it well-ventilated? The room may be one factor as to why the smell does not dissipate right away.

Those intending to buy a memory foam may also have to rethink it. Start small first, by purchasing a memory foam pillow or memory foam topper and see how it goes from there.

If the smell is really unbearable, your last resort is to replace this with an organic, chemical free mattress instead.
