According to the Storm Prediction Center, mattresses, mattress toppers or pads can serve as protective coverings during a very strong typhoon or tornado.

When these disaster strikes, you of course need to immediately seek shelter such as a stairwell, in the bathtub or under the table and even then, you have to cover yourself with a mattress pad or sleeping bag to cushion yourself.
