The Sleeping Bag Project

What makes the sleeping bag project so special that hotels like the Hyatt Regency and Sheraton Towers donated a thousand worth of mattress pads, blankets and beddings? It’s a project spearheaded by Donna DiGilio of Oak Par which helps provide a decent sleeping space of the homeless.

DiGilio came up with the idea a dozen years ago after reading a magazine article. The project had been running low on bedding materials when den leader Kit Bernardi and her husband, Robert Hope, suggested contacting hotels for donations.

The Hyatt Regency Chicago donated 2,000 blankets, bedspreads and mattress pads. The Sheraton Chicago Hotel and Towers donated about 50 mattress pads.

It was a win-win situation for the hotels, which were looking for a useful way to recycle the materials, and for the 15 members of the Sleeping Bag Project.

DiGilio said the materials can be made into about 200 sleeping bags. Nuns from the Fraternite Notre Dame, which has its mother house in Chicago, will distribute the sleeping bags to the homeless. DiGilio said the project has given out 1,700 sleeping bags to date.

With all the people being put out on the streets by reason of foreclosure. The country is in need of such a worthy project.
