Mattress Firm buys American Mattress

by Lilian on Sunday, June 10th, 2007

Mattress Firm has completed the acquisition of 16 American Mattress locations. Terms of the acquisition were not disclosed.

The acquisition increases the Houston-based retailer’s store count to more than 50 locations in Houston and brings the company’s total store count to more than 390 stores in 35 markets across 20 states.

Paul Stork, one of the original founders of Mattress Firm, purchased Chicago-based American Mattress’ Houston assets in 2005 and set up a local corporate headquarters with plans to build the company into a powerhouse in the retail mattress industry.

The 16 American Mattress locations closed in May, and Mattress Firm will immediately begin the process of transitioning the locations with new signage, its signature store format and product selection. The company expects to reopen all the stores soon.
