Mattress Economics: People splurge for health these days
With the current economic crunch, you would think that people actually refusing to splurge on beddings and mattresses. But as this report shows, when it comes to health, buying a costly mattress may in fact be more practical and cost-effective.
Doug Lake, who opened The Mattress Store at 2733 28th St. SE in late April, said priorities have changed.
“Back in the ’70s, when I started, a mattress was just an item purchase. Now, it’s a health purchase.”
People are willing to pay more than $2,000 for a thick memory foam and latex bed, he said.
Lake offers Spring Air, manufactured in Grand Rapids, and Englander mattresses, from Chicago.
The store specializes in memory foam and latex models.
“For many people, that five, six, seven hours of rest is important, and they are willing to spend the money,” he said. “People want to improve their health.
“They want to feel good when they wake up in the morning.”
Are you one of those not thinking twice about spending for sleep items?
