Here’s an unusual incident involving the discard of an old mattress, which turned out to be a real life saver, more than anything.

A mattress that was being discarded Monday proved useful when it broke a tree trimmer’s 20-foot fall, according to the Palm Desert Police Department.

A worker was trimming palm trees in the 40-000 block of Sandpiper Court about 10:50 a.m. when his cutting tool connected with nearby power lines.

This caused an electricity jolt that sent sparks flying over his head, causing him to loose his balance and fall off the ladder, according to police.

Just as this was happening, a next-door neighbor was throwing out an old mattress.

The trimmer landed on the mattress and escaped with a scraped arm, according to police.

The man was taken to a hospital as a precaution.
