American Chiropractic Association’s Guide to Mattress Shopping

October was the National Chiropractic Month and in observance of this, the American Chiropractic Association via press release, sent guidelines to consumers when it comes to mattress shopping. Many suffer from chronic back pains as a result of sleeping on an improper mattress and according to the ACA, investing in a good bed is not only for your own comfort, it helps improve your health.

Their advice on what to look for in a mattress?

Support
- a good mattress should provide support completely. Gaps, such as in the waist area, isn’t full support.
- a good mattress should be firm, especially in the areas supporting the shoulders, hips and back.

Comfort
- a good mattress must be tested for a minimum of five minutes to gauge your comfort level. If you cannot find the right position, then it’s not the mattress for you.

Size
- Your choice of mattress should ideally complement your sleeping habits. Do you love stretching out? Rolling on the bed? Or do you have a bed mate who loves doing this? Make sure you have enough room on your bed and make sure that your bed mate isn’t bothered by the motion when you move about.
