Air Mattress Rescue
As it is summer time in Australia, people do take pleasure in enjoying the waters and sights at the beach. Some even take their air mattresses out and use it to paddle through the waves, because that is the kind of thing you do for fun at the beach! One family, on the other hand, had a little less fun. Their air mattress sprung a leak and the waves took them way off coast and drifting in the sea for a couple of hours, until the coast guard rescued them.
A man and his two children were lucky to be rescued after floating out to sea on a leaking air matress on Western Port Bay, south of Melbourne, last night.
Police say the 35-year-old man, 11-year-old girl and 12-year-old boy from Crib Point had been paddling along the shore line at Wooleys Beach when the tide dragged them about two kilometres out to sea.
The Coast Guard was called by a woman at Hastings, who could see what she thought was an overturned boat.
The three had been in the water clinging to the air mattress, which had sprung a leak, for an hour-and-a-half when the Coast Guard arrived.
They were not wearing lifejackets. The water was reasonably cold and the three were treated for mild hypothermia but otherwise suffered no injuries.
Coast Guard spokesman Ray Sanders says the mattress would have been easily blown away from shore in the conditions at the time because of its height.
