A door for a headboard?

From an issue of Martha Stewart’s Living magazine published a decade ago (but still very much useful and applicable to today’s standards), here’s a guide to turning old doors into headboards.

  • Cut 1/4-inch-thick plywood about 1/4 inch smaller than recessed opening in headboard, then staple two pieces of extra-loft batting to it.
  • The first piece of batting should be about 3 inches smaller all around than the plywood in order to create a raised center; the second piece should be the same dimensions as plywood (batting should not wrap around edges).
  • Then wrap a piece of fabric about 3 inches larger all around than plywood — we used matelasse in a celadon shade — over batting and plywood, and staple it to the back of the board.
  • Staple Velcro strips along the perimeter of the recessed area on the headboard and along the perimeter of the back of the fabric board. Position the fabric board against the headboard, and attach.
