Sleep Country has had a long-standing practice of giving to charities some of the more lightly used mattresses it collects. But most old mattresses aren’t up to the rigours of accepting new sleepers. The company wanted to avoid throwing them into the garbage, so it hit upon recycling.

“It was a conscious effort to divert as much as we can that goes to the landfill,” said Christine Magee, Sleep Country president. The retailer expects to recycle about 60,000 mattresses and box springs a year in Ontario, and give about 30,000 to charity.

Three other major mattress retailers - Sears Canada, the Brick, and Leon’s Furniture - couldn’t immediately provide information on their recycling practices.

The city of Toronto started a pilot project in September for recycling large items that don’t fit into its new garbage bins, part of a highly touted municipal goal of diverting 70 per cent of residential garbage from landfills. An estimated quarter million mattresses and box springs are thrown out in a city of Toronto’s size each year.

To date, the city has gathered about 56 tonnes of old mattresses and box springs in its pilot project and is considering ways of expanding it.

Bed Bath & Beyond Opens In Canada

The toddler had a bit of swelling and a cut lip but it would’ve been a lot worse had the mattress not been there.

A TODDLER who fell four metres from a western Sydney balcony has been saved by a discarded mattress.

The 18-month-old girl clambered over a railing at a Merrylands flat and fell two metres onto the roof of a shed, today.

She landed on the mattress, then rolled and fell another two metres to the ground, the NRMA CareFlight rescue helicopter service said in a statement.

Police, ambulance and CareFlight crew rushed to the flat near the intersection of Merrylands Road and Pitt Street, the statement said.

“The doctor teamed with ambulance officers to treat the girl for facial swelling and a cut lip,” it said.
The girl was taken to Westmead Children’s Hospital by ambulance for observation and was reported to be in a stable condition.

This is the one rare time an irresponsible act benefited something good. But consumers must also be reminded that mattress disposal should always be done properly.

Mattress Saves Toddler From Fall

MIAMI — Keeping your home comfortably cool at night while you sleep is a big waste of energy and money.

But a Broward man has designed an air conditioner that only cools where you need it most at night, so you can sleep easy while cutting your power bill.

Jim Bass, who runs an air conditioning business, has invented an air conditioner — just for your bed.

The unit is built into a piece of furniture at the foot of the bed, so it looks like part of your room — no wires or bulky machine. It blows a steady stream of cool air over sleeping bodies to keep them cool, so you can keep your main home air conditioning at a cost-saving higher temperature all night.

Bass’ Sleeprite Cooling System just cools the width and length of the bed, so while a home’s temperature might be 78 degrees, the area of the bed it is a comfortable 73. Each side of the bed can be cooled differently, since the unit has two separate blowers.

Bass said the unit saves energy, resulting in lower utility bills.

Bass is hoping to mass-market his bed air conditioner. He will be demonstrating it at the home show scheduled for Dec. 5-7 at the Broward County Convention Center.

Sleeprite Cooling System

The airline told employees in a newsletter on Monday that it is considering a price of $7, and has not set a date to start the sales.

Of course, passengers have the option whether to purchase this or not. But the move isn’t only to help with cost. For passengers, it is a lot more sanitary than using the same pillows and blankets other passengers have used in earlier flights.

New Pillows and Blankets for US Airways

According to ISPA’s monthly Bedding Barometer, unit sales of mattresses plummeted by 18.4 percent compared to Sept. 2007 while dollar sales dropped 8 percent for the month to $231.6 million.

In September, the average unit selling price for the mattresses sold settled in at $347.66, up 4 percent over September of last year. For the year to date, the average unit selling price declined 1.8 percent to $321.16.

Sales of Mattress Fall Anew in September

The Denver Mattress Company does their yearly charity contributions but have recently launched an “in-store” campaign which should help raise about $150,000 for the homeless. The said campaign is now taking place all over the company’s retail store.

For every mattress sold between November 1st up to November 27, a $20 donation will be made to charity.

The campaign will also include fundraising and awareness programs in newspaper and TV ads.

Restonic, while not exactly new in the market is showing off their brand new high-end models featuring beds going for $499 to $799. They have less disposable income.”

CPSC is aware of the death of a 5-month-old child on August 31, 2008 in Brooklyn, N.Y. The child became entrapped between the mattress and the drop side rail of the convertible crib and suffocated.

This recall involves the Pla. convertible crib/playpen/bassinet/bed with model number PLK-909. "Playkids U.S.A." can be found on the packaging and on a label sewn into the side of the crib. The model number can be found on the packaging. The convertible cribs have a drop side rail, a stationary side rail, a canopy assembly, and a bassinet. The sides of the convertible crib, the mattress support, the bassinet, the canopy and the bedskirt are covered in fabric and mesh. The fabric and the mesh come in a variety of colors and patterns.

The convertible cribs, which were made in China, were sold in juvenile product retailers in New York from March 2007 through September 2008 for about $100.

Consumers should stop using the recalled convertible cribs immediately and contact Playkids USA to receive a full refund.

18000Mattress Expands in Maryland

LEXINGTON, Ky.–Net income for Tempur-Pedic plummeted 38 percent in the third quarter, to $24.1 million.

The quarterly financial results for the nation’s fifth largest mattress manufacturer were yet another sign of the weakness in the overall mattress market. Tempur-Pedic’s sales fell 14 percent in the quarter, to $252.8 million, driven down by a 17 percent drop in domestic sales. Globally, unit sales of mattresses declined 15 percent, and unit sales of pillows slipped by 10 percent—both categories suffering from an equal 18 percent dive in unit sales in the United States. Both gross profit margin and operating profit margin also fell significantly in the quarter.

Among the few up notes, Tempur-Pedic’s operating cash flow rose 30 percent in the third quarter. The company was also able to increase its cash balance by 28 percent, and reduce its total debt by 7 percent.

A company statement predicted that its sales and earnings in the fourth quarter will fall below prior expectations. Sales for all of 2008 will likely finish at between $930 million and $950 million, or from 14 percent to 16 percent below sales for 2007.

WSN says it is charging residents $20 per mattress dropped at its centres, cheaper than the fee charged at many other metro facilities but still providing a healthy profit margin for the company – which also saves “thousands of cubic metres of airspace”.
The average mattress weighs just 35kg but takes up 0.7m3 of airspace, making it one of the biggest wastes of landfill space possible.

Residents can drop off unwanted mattresses at WSN’s facilities at Artarmon, Auburn, Belrose, Chullora, Eastern Creek, Lucas Heights, Rockdale, Ryde, Seven Hills and Jacks Gully (Narellan).

“Sydney residents are becoming increasingly conscious of their environmental footprint and they want to see that nothing is wasted when they dispose of unwanted household goods,” says acting WSN CEO Charles Munro.

Greenpoint Sidewalks Filled With Discarded Mattresses

The new lab, which occupies 836 square feet and has four work stations for pressure- mapping studies, demonstrates Sealy’s leadership in research, technology and sleep science, according to Sealy officials. The lab uses a high-tech pressure-mapping system costing thousands of dollars to identify pressure points that lead to tossing and turning, thus disrupting sleep, officials said. It is the only facility of its kind in the mattress industry, they said.

“Pressure management is one of the focal points of Sealy’s product development process,” said Larry Rogers, Sealy’s CEO. “The Center of Excellence will provide crucial insight into developing cutting-edge sleep systems that help consumers maximize every minute of sleep.”

Alan Letton, chief science officer at Sealy, asserted that the center marks a major advance in mattress research and development and allows Sealy to connect the quality of a mattress to the quality of sleep in a definitive way.

Temperature Regulating Bed and Bath Products

For August, the average unit selling price for the mattresses that were sold edged up 1.3 percent. For the year to date, however, the average unit selling prices dropped 2.4 percent.

A report from Longbow Research on the mattress industry indicated that mattress sales thus far in September have continued on the same weak path. Prepared by analysts Mark Rupe and Leah Villalobos, the report said the sales trends for September thus far have continued along the same lines as August. Sales during Labor Day, traditionally a high point in the retail year for mattresses, were “relatively disappointing, dampening any optimism that trends will reverse now that the major selling season is over,” the report said.

Mattress Sales No Good In August

Simmons Bedding announced on Tuesday that its leader of eight years (Charles Ettel) would be departing the company, effective immediately, but staying on as vice chairman of the board of directors. The company gave no reason for the transition.

Steve Fendrich, currently chief operating officer, will take over the positions from Eitel. Fendrich joined the company in January as the chief operating officer. He will report to the newly formed executive committee of the board of directors, which consists of David Jones, Joseph Messner and Scott Schoen.

Kevin Damewood, who was executive vice president of sales and marketing and who assumed Hellyer’s CEO responsibilities with Cumbow after Hellyer’s resignation, has left the company. Also, Al Podratsky, senior vice president of supply-chain management, and Greg Moore, vice president of human resources, have departed.

Katie Sems, director of human resources, has succeeded Moore. Damewood and Podratsky will not be succeeded. In a statement issued by Spring Air, Cumbow said that “with the new, decentralized structure, some senior positions had either significantly changed or were no longer necessary.”

Under the new system, according to the statement, the manufacturing plant managers will now have “a reporting relationship” to the company’s regional sales heads, in addition to reporting to Jan Wettergren, senior vice president of manufacturing. Charles Dietiker has become senior vice president of sales for the Northwest, with the company’s facilities in Lacey, Wash., and Salt Lake City reporting to him. Howard Galant has become senior vice president of sales for California, responsible for the Los Angeles plant. Chad Megard has become senior vice president of sales for the Midwest, with the facilities in Columbus, Ohio, and Dallas under his direction. Robert Patten is now senior vice president of sales for the Eastern region, overseeing the plants in Chelsea, Mass.; New Brunswick, N.J.; Atlanta; and here.
