I hardly am crazy about flip-flops but I do know a few people who collect many types and designs of flip-flops (or slippers). Not exactly sure how long a slipper made from the same materials as an air mattress would last, but I’m betting it won’t even take a week.

The materials to this may be as soft as a cloud, as one should expect from an air mattress. But stuff like this is perhaps good for collecting and keeping only, never for long term use.

It’s interesting to see such a product, though.

A woman in Kisumu, Kenya is making a killing selling her beauty product — a hip enhancer that’s becoming the craze among the female population of her small town. Florence Atieno a 23 year old beauty shop owner saw the demand for this when it was evident the men folk preferred women with wider hips.

She says, “Kisumu has its share of pretty women but some of them are very slender and most of the time pass unnoticed”.

For materials, Florence Atieno makes use of foam mattress.

The foam mattress is measured to size and fixed at the sides of the biker, the appropriate measurement often a quarter inch. It is then covered by the cotton material and rendered fit for use.

Young women between 18-23 years are now flocking the Hamilton House Oginga Street looking for Maypol Fashion and Beauty Parlour.

Most of them prefer to call her outside where they negotiate in whispers before the deal is struck.

Ready-made shape boosters (not their original name) go for as much as Sh250.

Those who bring their own bikers pay Sh100 for hips only and Sh150 for all that goes on the backside.

The disadvantage, though, is that the padded shorts take fairly long to dry when washed hence an extra pair is necessary.

Those who have used the artificial hips talk of instant and positive results that have improved their social lives.

Back to School Bedding at Sears

It’s quite unbelievable. It’s stuff bedtime stories are made of, in fact. I don’t even remember or have an attachment to the bed I grew up in. But this story is really cute and it will make you go “Awww…”

Kurle married her husband, Chuck, in 1975, and a year later they had their first boy, Charles. They moved to Hastings in 1978. Kurle decided to hold onto the bed in case their next child was a girl, but four years later the couple had another boy, Joseph, and Kurle decided it was time to sell the bed.

They had a garage sale, and sold the bed, hutch, desk and chair to a woman named Mary Jean Engstrom. Kurle was keeping a diary at the time and made a note of who the bed went to and the date of the sale – July 27, 1980. She’s not exactly sure what made her write that information down, but thinks the bedroom set was special enough to her to make note of who it was sold to.

“I do these things; it’s just me,” she said.

She never looked back at her diaries until this year when tragedy struck her family. Her mother died of breast cancer this year, and no one in her family even knew she had the disease.

“You just don’t realize these things can happen,” she said.

Kurle went back to her diaries to find out as much as she could about her mom. When paging through one, she came across the entry about the bed, the garage sale and Engstrom. She immediately thought of Jackie Engstrom, who she’d met around 2006 at Thrifty White Drug Store. Jackie was an employee there who’d helped Kurle with the Kodak photo machine, and the two had become friends. At the time, Jackie was about 20 years old.

She sent Jackie an e-mail asking her if she knew Mary Jean Engstrom, curious to find out what had happened to her old bedroom set.

She got this response: “OH, MY GOSH!!! My grandmother is Mary Jean Engstrom (my dad’s mom), and I grew up with that white canopy bed my entire childhood!”
