The bed project inspired by an ad

Most people take inspirations from the stuff they see in magazines, whether it’s a feature or an actual ad. Fabianne is like one of those people, except that she really took to task building a bed she liked. It was this magazine print ad that inspired her to do her bed project.

And then Fabienne detailed everything in her blog, beginning with ideas to how she’s going to build this bed. She provides a step by step guide, which will probably inspire others to do the same.

Fabienne’s bed project ended with this one below, which is not the exact replica of the above photo. But she did this herself and can proudly say that there’s nothing else quite like it.

Using only basic materials you can buy or find anywhere, such as a card board and a pair of scissors, one can easily create this very useful cat bed or cat chaise lounge. The pattern and the instructions are all found at the Evil Mad Scientist Lab.

I’m not into cats so I wasn’t so sure if this does work but evidently, cats do enjoy card board boxes…so there you go.

Turn Your Milk Crate into Furniture

Here’s a clever solution for rooms with really small spaces using two twin mattresses. At night, the room has a comfortable bed to sleep on. But at daytime it’s a breezy open room with a lounge area to host parties and gatherings with friends, as well as provide an guest space:

I put legs on the mattresses with hooks to keep it all together during the night. We have the bedlinen in a basket next to the couch/bed. The top mattresses are the thin type, and I have made covers for them, so it is easy to make the bed in the evening.

The back cushions contains a foam mattress in the size 90 cm. by 90 cm. 9 cm. thick It is folded and hold together with a strap. When we have friend over two of these on the floor makes it out for one bed. The foam sort of makes the mattress stick to the floor so it doesn’t slide apart during the night. We make the bed in the extra room, so it is still possible to have a little privacy.

Bed idea for Ikea’s Tromso Bed Frame

How would you like to customize a generic bed frame like this into a softer bed design, one fit for girls?

Ikea Hacker shows us how, when they transformed the Tromso from Ikea into their daughter’s coloful bed

1. We took off the ladder and turned it over.
2. We flipped over all of the wire mesh panels to give even support to the mattress.
3. We had a trundle bed and we fitted it under the Tromso upside down. We took off the back bar that was not lined up with the other two. We also took off the front boarder bars that were used to hold the bed in place (that was now upside down and where you climbed into the bed). Traced the middle hole of the boarder bar onto the back brace bar. This then was put where the front boarder bar was. This gave the bed stability again.
4. Screwed screws now on top of each post and strung wire across. On this wire we hung up curtains to create the ‘princess’ effect.
5. Put the trundle bed underneath, and mattress on top.

I’ve found this really good idea for mattress pads that really seem to fit perfectly on the bed or is becoming a bother, more than a comfort. Make better use for it by sewing it onto the fitted sheet?

FutureGirl, who runs a craft blog, explains how she did it in a step by step procedure. What you’ll need is your mattress pad, a fitted sheet you prefer, some pins, needles and scissors, and of course — sewing skills.

I think it’s one of the best ideas I’ve heard.

A door for a headboard?

From an issue of Martha Stewart’s Living magazine published a decade ago (but still very much useful and applicable to today’s standards), here’s a guide to turning old doors into headboards.

Cut 1/4-inch-thick plywood about 1/4 inch smaller than recessed opening in headboard, then staple two pieces of extra-loft batting to it.

The first piece of batting should be about 3 inches smaller all around than the plywood in order to create a raised center; the second piece should be the same dimensions as plywood (batting should not wrap around edges).

Then wrap a piece of fabric about 3 inches larger all around than plywood — we used matelasse in a celadon shade — over batting and plywood, and staple it to the back of the board.

Staple Velcro strips along the perimeter of the recessed area on the headboard and along the perimeter of the back of the fabric board. Position the fabric board against the headboard, and attach.

Ever tried making your own mattress pad with things you already have at your disposal? It could be as simple as putting layers of fleece on your bed (about three would be great) or sewing a new home made mattress pad of your own.

Flannel sheets or cotton fabric make good mattress pads because these materials can keep the bed cool. Just sew or quilt this together, in between a foam. Even an old quilted comforter may be used as stuffing for your home made mattress pad. You can also use sleeping bags as an alternative (to foam).

So that the pad stays in position, get yourself mattress pad elastic clips, which is available at most bed and bath stores.

Found this in a photo gallery and while there are no descriptions, I find that this design is very simple and practical, and perhaps easy to create. I’m not an expert at woodworking but if I show this to someone who is, I think that it can be recreated.

The low-level bed frame is perfect for a zen inspired or minimalist room. But I just don’t know how long it can maintain the form of the mattress, though, as there are is no sturdy side support for a frame like this.

To provide ample support or prevent deformation, a thin plywood on top might just do the trick. however, I’m not recommending this for long-term. A mattress needs a proper bed frame to last their warranties.

You may not be able to recycle your worn out mattress but you can turn the mattress frame into a book shelf by following this how-to guide from Instructables.

Step 1: You will need the following to complete this project —

1) Mattress box frame
2) Flathead screwdriver, hammer, pliers, measuring tape, and pencil
3) Approximately (16) 1.25″ Wood screws
4) Some sort of saw to cut wood (precisely!)
5) Drill
6) Sander, stain, and varnish….if you like pretty things.

A T-square also makes drawing lines easier, but is definitely not necessary.

First, it’s good to understand that getting rid of bed bugs is a process and must require patience. The most effective way of dealing with these pest is seeking the help of a professional pest control agency. They have the right tools, chemicals and equipment to handle this. So, you may also require a budget set aside.

But if this isn’t in your immediate plans, you can do a quick-fix:

Change your sheets at least every two weeks or more often

Air out your mattress once a month

Flip your mattress regularly

Vacuum your mattress

Don’t get to bed if you haven’t been cleaning yourself up

Avoid eating on the bed

No pets on the bed

Buy insect powders or sprays, but make sure that the chemicals are not harmful to the rest living in the house with you, including pets.

It looks like this bed is suspended in midair but the fact is there are parts of the bed frame hinged to the wall and the mattress just extends beyond the frame. The whole thing brings this illusion of floating….which will probably work best for insomniacs or those who have trouble sleeping, as floating denotes a certain sense of calmness and might help them sleep better.

The frame is sturdy enough, so there’s no reason to worry that it might collapse under pressure.

Whatever happened to this one I wonder? Does it still exist or have the city scrapped the idea?

In 2004, Sean Godsell spearheaded a project in Melbourne, to benefit the homeless. He installed a shelter by the street, specifically by the bus stops where one could find a bed with woven steal mattress and blankets.

Splurging on mattress toppers may not be feasible for some people so why not create one for less than $10? Here’s a great idea from Thrifty Fun:

Collect or purchase new low cost bed pillows, standard or queen size; fiber filled ones usually run $2.00 each or use old ones you already have that have gone flat. Collect enough, approximately 9-15 pillows. Stitch together sides and ends in a vertical manner, much like a quilt is prepared. You have now created a topper! Cover with a bed sheet when in use and store in a plastic comforter bag.Much less expense and just as comfy as a faux feather bed topper!

If you have pets in the house, this would be useful for them.

Well, folding looks like an easy job, right? It should be. But some people do have trouble. Heck, even mothers like me have trouble folding mattresses perfectly.

You’ve probably seen that video of the Japanese girl who demonstrates how to fold t-shirts properly. How about something for mattress covers? You can check this blog for the full step by step guide. It isn’t in video format, but it’s more than enough. Fussy people will love this. But everyone else can benefit from the instructions. Storing your mattress covers properly helps maintain it’s quality, and who wouldn’t want that?

I have tried the instructions from the photos. My first wasn’t as successful but the next ones were better. In time, I’ll get used to it.

DIY - How to make your regular spring mattress into a memory foam mattress!

What is a memory foam mattress topper? It’s a layer of memory foam that can be place on top of your regular spring mattress to get the same effect as a memory foam mattress. But how do you make a regular spring mattress into a memory foam mattress?

Instead of just putting one layer of topper, you put 2 or even 3 toppers. A memory foam mattress is basically about 6 to 8 inches of regular foam at the bottom and 3 to 4 inches of memory foam layer at the top. The regular foam can be substituted with your regular old spring mattress.
There is no need for you to buy a $1500 memory foam mattress unless you have lots of cash and you like throwing it in your toilet.

I’ve personally used memory foam mattress toppers for my spring coil mattress before.

With 3 to 5 inches of memory foam mattress toppers, you can expect about the same quality as a regular memory foam mattress. The only important thing is to get a mattress topper with a high density rating. (anything about 4lbs. is good, anything less is pretty much crap.)

Memory foam mattress toppers come in 1 to 2 and a half inches, so you might need about 2 to 3 memory foam mattress toppers depending on the width of the topper you get.

So just make sure you have at least 3 inches of memory foam at the top of your mattress and you should experience a whole new way of sleeping.
Of course, I have moved onto a full memory foam mattress since my old mattress was just too old and collapsed during work. (night work that is…)

I’ve tested it with 5 inches of memory foam toppers but it doesn’t seem to make a difference whether I have 3 inches or 5 inches. After a certain point (about 3 inches), the effect of memory foam reaches it’s peak so…

You can make your own memory mattress for about $450 with some foam among other things needed. If you know a little about memory foam mattresses, then you know how density of the memory foam can affect your overall mattress. Basically the higher the density, the softer and better the memory foam is. By building your own mattress, you can choose the most dense memory foam available and customize it to your liking.

The cool thing about making your own mattress is that you can really customize the density of the foam according to what you like. I picked a medium density top layer for the “cozy factor”, and a higher density second layer for support. The eggcrate provides a breathing channel to help maintain a good temperature. The bottom layer is just to prevent the mattress from “bottoming out” in case you decide to do pushups on it or something (your fists would fully compress the memory foam and touch the bed frame without the thick, firm layer underneath).
