The Denver Mattress Company does their yearly charity contributions but have recently launched an “in-store” campaign which should help raise about $150,000 for the homeless. The said campaign is now taking place all over the company’s retail store.

For every mattress sold between November 1st up to November 27, a $20 donation will be made to charity.

The campaign will also include fundraising and awareness programs in newspaper and TV ads.

Also in coming in as new market players in the bedding industry is a company called Kindel Furniture which carry the Hypnos Mattress line, a high end bedding brand.

Restonic, while not exactly new in the market is showing off their brand new high-end models featuring beds going for $499 to $799. Says its company Vice President, Laurie Tokarz — “Retailers need to offer value in these challenging times. Instead of looking at $1,299, consumers are looking for $699 beds. They have less disposable income.”

Otis Bedding is also introducing to the public its brand new iForm Bright Mornings mattress.

New Bedding Players Debut at High Point Market

Linen ‘n Things had over 589 stores when it declared its current state in May.

Drivers this weekend on Bullsboro Drive and the bypass at Newnan Crossing noted that in addition to the usual dancing pizza slices, realty jockeys, and roadside preachers, there were also walking advertisements for a 30 percent liquidation sale at the Newnan Linens ‘n Things.

The Newnan store survived the first round of Linens ‘n Things closings. But the big plan to restructure Linens ‘n Things failed, and a plan to auction Linens ‘n Things to someone who could keep it going also has failed.

Linens ‘n Things Closes Shop?

LEXINGTON, Ky.–Net income for Tempur-Pedic plummeted 38 percent in the third quarter, to $24.1 million.

The quarterly financial results for the nation’s fifth largest mattress manufacturer were yet another sign of the weakness in the overall mattress market. Tempur-Pedic’s sales fell 14 percent in the quarter, to $252.8 million, driven down by a 17 percent drop in domestic sales. Globally, unit sales of mattresses declined 15 percent, and unit sales of pillows slipped by 10 percent—both categories suffering from an equal 18 percent dive in unit sales in the United States. Both gross profit margin and operating profit margin also fell significantly in the quarter.

Among the few up notes, Tempur-Pedic’s operating cash flow rose 30 percent in the third quarter. The company was also able to increase its cash balance by 28 percent, and reduce its total debt by 7 percent.

A company statement predicted that its sales and earnings in the fourth quarter will fall below prior expectations. Sales for all of 2008 will likely finish at between $930 million and $950 million, or from 14 percent to 16 percent below sales for 2007.

Temperature Regulating Bed and Bath Products

Simmons Bedding announced on Tuesday that its leader of eight years (Charles Ettel) would be departing the company, effective immediately, but staying on as vice chairman of the board of directors. The company gave no reason for the transition.

Steve Fendrich, currently chief operating officer, will take over the positions from Eitel. Fendrich joined the company in January as the chief operating officer. He will report to the newly formed executive committee of the board of directors, which consists of David Jones, Joseph Messner and Scott Schoen.

Simmons Also Without a CEO

The company has named Steve Cumbow, chief operating officer, as interim chief executive officer. Kevin Damewood, who was executive vice president of sales and marketing and who assumed Hellyer’s CEO responsibilities with Cumbow after Hellyer’s resignation, has left the company. Also, Al Podratsky, senior vice president of supply-chain management, and Greg Moore, vice president of human resources, have departed.

Katie Sems, director of human resources, has succeeded Moore. Damewood and Podratsky will not be succeeded. In a statement issued by Spring Air, Cumbow said that “with the new, decentralized structure, some senior positions had either significantly changed or were no longer necessary.”

Under the new system, according to the statement, the manufacturing plant managers will now have “a reporting relationship” to the company’s regional sales heads, in addition to reporting to Jan Wettergren, senior vice president of manufacturing. Charles Dietiker has become senior vice president of sales for the Northwest, with the company’s facilities in Lacey, Wash., and Salt Lake City reporting to him. Howard Galant has become senior vice president of sales for California, responsible for the Los Angeles plant. Chad Megard has become senior vice president of sales for the Midwest, with the facilities in Columbus, Ohio, and Dallas under his direction. Therapedic Mattress together with Hickory Springs has launched its latest line of elite latex and memory foam mattresses that retail at about $1,299 to $2,199. First seen at the Las Vegas Market last July, the I-care mattress is shipping to stores.

360th Store for Mattress Giant

Prices of mattress seem to be going in only one direction, northwards. This is because of the surge in raw material costs. After nearly 6% hike in June, prices have gone up by another 7% in July. This two rounds of hike have increased the price of a regular size (78”X60”) of mattress to Rs 8,560-8,800 a piece. The premium range mattresses are now priced at Rs 17,500-Rs 26,045.

Global prices of latex, cotton and polyester - the main raw materials for mattresses - have gone up in the past few months. Latex prices went up by 60% while prices of cotton grew by 20% in the last two months. Prices of polyester also surged by 25% in the same period.

The combined price rise of raw materials has affected the profit margins of the industry by 15-20% in last three months, experts said.

The popular mattress brands such as Kurl-On, Sleepwell and Springwel have raised prices of their products to neutralise the spiralling cost of raw materials. Kurl-On chairman and managing director Sudhakar Pai said: “We kept our prices under control for a few months. But now we are forced to increase the prices as the rising raw material costs have been affecting our bottomlines.” Kurl-On is the market leader with a 40% share, marginally ahead of Sleepwell, of the Rs 1,000 crore organised market.

Industry experts said the profitability of the mattress companies are still under pressure, leaving room for further price hike. “Our profitability has gone down by 10% even after we raised prices in July,” said Kurl-On chief marketing officer G Sivaram.

The peculiarity of the industry is that price hike by any of the three major players is normally followed by the others, said Mansuk Shah, a long-time dealer.

Sealy reports a drop in their 2Q earnings

JESSUP, Md.–(BUSINESS WIRE)–Dormia, a leading mattress retailer and manufacturer with 20 stores across the Central and Eastern United States, will conduct a court ordered liquidation sale beginning Thursday, July 3. The company filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection earlier this year and the court selected Hudson Capital Partners, LLC to manage the store liquidations.

Inventory valued at approximately $4.3 million will be liquidated at below-market prices in a sale that is expected to last approximately 10 weeks. Merchandise to be sold will include a wide range of high quality mattresses, pillows, bed covers and other bedding accessories. The liquidation sale will involve all 20 Dormia locations in 9 states (see store list attached). Following the liquidation of the stores, Dormia will continue to manufacture bedding products for sale by other retailers, but will no longer have any store locations.
