Samsonite Pop-Up Travel Cot

The toddler had a bit of swelling and a cut lip but it would’ve been a lot worse had the mattress not been there.

A TODDLER who fell four metres from a western Sydney balcony has been saved by a discarded mattress.

The 18-month-old girl clambered over a railing at a Merrylands flat and fell two metres onto the roof of a shed, today.

She landed on the mattress, then rolled and fell another two metres to the ground, the NRMA CareFlight rescue helicopter service said in a statement.

Police, ambulance and CareFlight crew rushed to the flat near the intersection of Merrylands Road and Pitt Street, the statement said.

“The doctor teamed with ambulance officers to treat the girl for facial swelling and a cut lip,” it said.
The girl was taken to Westmead Children’s Hospital by ambulance for observation and was reported to be in a stable condition.

This is the one rare time an irresponsible act benefited something good. But consumers must also be reminded that mattress disposal should always be done properly.

CPSC is aware of the death of a 5-month-old child on August 31, 2008 in Brooklyn, N.Y. The child became entrapped between the mattress and the drop side rail of the convertible crib and suffocated.

This recall involves the Pla. convertible crib/playpen/bassinet/bed with model number PLK-909. "Playkids U.S.A." can be found on the packaging and on a label sewn into the side of the crib. The model number can be found on the packaging. The convertible cribs have a drop side rail, a stationary side rail, a canopy assembly, and a bassinet. The sides of the convertible crib, the mattress support, the bassinet, the canopy and the bedskirt are covered in fabric and mesh. The fabric and the mesh come in a variety of colors and patterns.

The convertible cribs, which were made in China, were sold in juvenile product retailers in New York from March 2007 through September 2008 for about $100.

Consumers should stop using the recalled convertible cribs immediately and contact Playkids USA to receive a full refund.

Disney Fairies Bed Canopy

There are some 250,000 kids all over America who do not have the luxury of sleeping on a good bed. Thankfully, companies like Sealy and the Barnabas Network of Greensboro NC have put together the “No Child Left on the Floor” campaign to help these kids. A donation of some 150 mattresses has been made in Guilford County but the campaign and its organizers are still waiting for more help.

How the program works: Social workers and the workers in the school system refer children ages two through 18 who are in need of a bed. Then Sealy donates the mattresses and the Barnabas Network gives them out.

If you would like to make a donation to the Barnabas Network, call 370-4002. The Barnabas Network can pick up donations, which are tax deductible. They accept GENTLY used furniture: beds, mattresses, dining tables, sofas, dressers and working appliances.

Q: How does a baby crib waterbed prevent SIDS and Back Problems?
A: In the seventies, we were advised to lay babies on their belly to increase their mobility. In this same period, there was a massive increase in the number of sudden cot deaths worldwide. These were assumed to result from the fact that laying a baby face-down effectively covers up the face. Fear of sudden cot death is now leading people to place babies in an alternative, but equally unsuitable, position: lying on their backs. This can create a range of orthopedic problems such as scoliosis (curvature of the spine) and the so-called torticollis (wry-neck). In addition, a series of other ailments have been observed ranging from motion disorders to skull deformities. In conclusion, placing a baby on its back leads to malformed growth and a damaged spine and placing a baby in the belly position increases the risk of SIDS. However lying on your back on a water bed is nowadays recommended by any well-informed orthopedist and most people who suffer from back pain. This is because it provides an even level of support for the entire body - it manages to be as hard as stone and yet simultaneously as soft as a cloud.

Flower Beds for Precious Babies

• No plastic coverings. Remove this immediately upon delivery of the crib mattress.
• Ensure that the crib mattress fits snugly and perfectly. It should be in the standard size - 27 1/4inches by 57 5/8inches - with a depth of at least 6 inches.
• Opt for a firm crib mattress rather than a really soft mattress as the latter is a hazard. Soft mattresses have the tendency to suffocate the infant or provide improper corner support, your baby may be trapped.
• There’s no need for a topper with a crib mattress. Again this is a safety hazard which can potentially suffocate babies.
• Use organic mattress if possible.
• In the same manner, use organic beddings.
• Babies shouldn’t be allowed to sleep on air mattress or waterbeds yet.
• Be aware of crib recalls or product recalls. These are usually published in the news.
