From designer Francesca Lanzavecchia comes this cluster of innovative light pillows which would glow and heat up, providing warmth to the sleeper. It’s perfect for cuddling time and for cold nights, especially when you’re sleeping alone.

According to the designer: “LightMates are soft anthropomorphic pillows and warming lamps. This awfully attractive creature heats, lights and provides company. Their different sizes answer to everyone’s need of heat; a mate to hug or a huge companion you can lay on.”

The idea seems cozy, but the pillow looks the least bit inviting to cuddle.

Hand-made Mattress Business is Picking Up for this Family

This photo apparently appeared in Time Magazine’s Picture of the Week.

Can you guess what it is? Well, obviously its a group of people sleeping on a mattress. But why are they there? These are parents of new university students (Freshmen) in China. They have come to school to visit their children and was given permission to bunk with other parents and have mattresses prepared for them for overnight sleeping at the school’s gym.

“Everyone should have the ability to change a futon from a bed into a couch easily, without having to endure physical pain. On more than one occasion, my bed had hit me in the face and collapsed on my hands with no remorse.”

His lawyers said:

“There’s no human error in this case. In our eyes, the bed owes payment for the attacks, and must attend an anger management seminar in place of time served. If we sued IKEA for the problems my client is having with one bed, the court system would be flooded with similar cases, most only brought to trial with the hopes of siphoning cash from the corporation with little actual legal dispute between the plaintiffs and IKEA.”

Hearing and deliberation should begin on Friday, the 10th of October.

Man Sues His Mattress

Developed by Hollandia, the luxury mattress based in Israel, the Safe-T Bed also comes with other models that includes a TV, DVD player and a massage system.

The New York Times was able to hold an interview with the owner of Hollandia who tells us more about how he uses the Safe-T bed at his own home.

How is the economic crisis affecting your bed?

It came at a perfect time. It came to me in a vision: If people don’t trust the bank anymore, it’s becoming like the old days, like my father putting the money under the mattress. But this time we need something more sophisticated, more upscale.

But $20,000 for a mattress that’s supposed to help you save money doesn’t make sense. Why not just put your money under the mattress you have?

You’re actually getting two benefits in one: First, you have a safe place to put your money, and you also get a good quality sleep. If you just put the money under the mattress without the safe, no insurance will cover you.

What kind of safe is it?

A heavy-duty steel safe, about 5 by 12 inches, and 7 inches deep.

Do you have one?

I have two. I have a huge, unusual bedroom. Normally I have even more because I test all the beds before they go on the market.

How much is stashed in yours?

Between $10,000 to $15,000. I feel more secure when I have cash next to me.

Doshi Levien’s Mattress Chaupar

Not quite sure where to categorize this furniture because it is simply not a chair, nor a lounge nor a daybed, nor something you add to make your mattress comfortable.

This is designed from polyurethane foam covered with textile (removable) and comes with no basic structure from the inside. But the base is made of plywood.

It was launched in the late 60’s. At that time, this was considered quite revolutionary.

From the Design Museum, a brief description of this work by Joe Colombo:

In 1967, he unveiled the Additional Living System consisting of moulded polyurethane cushions in six different sizes which could be pinned together in different configurations according to the users’ wishes. Two years later, he took self-assembly a step further in the Tube chair composed of four ready-made upholstered semi-rigid cylinders which, once again, could be put together into any shape the user desired. The final futuristic touch was the packaging. Colombo insisted that the cylinders of each Tube chair were sold “off-the-shelf” in a drawstring bag of his design.

Mattress Fiber Composition

It’s hard to imagine that this indescribable furniture is really a place to rest, a bed in other words. It does seem a design concept straight out of a futuristic movie. Quite certain that this isn’t a movie prop, the bed is in fact the creation of Zaha Hadid and Patrik Schumacher and may be viewed at the 11th Venice Architecture Biennale between now until November.

The Skull Sleeping Chamber

There is something different about this mattress. If you notice how it’s made up, the mattress is elevated about 5″ at one side, to nearly flat on the other side. The mattress pad is already inclined as is.

Pampering feet with Memory Foam Insoles

Investigators to the crime scene do their very best to solve it, which means that mattresses are sometimes broken down to the core, to determine what actually happened.

The photo below is an example of how a mattress was exposed:

This mattress had multiple layers of foam, each removed and bagged for pre-treatment and transport. Note the springs. Springs can be sprayed with a heavy bleach concentration so long as the area below is protected.

Once dry, the springs are sealed with Kilz.

The entire mattress can be taken apart for movement. This is best at times in hotels at times. If the entire mattress carries a strong odor and will offend others, deconstruction of the mattress can be done for placement in black, heavy duty plastic bags. The remaining springs can be bleached and/or sealed.

At other times, holes can be cut into the the ends and middle of the mattress, rope placed in the holes, and tied into loops as handles. Never trust the manufacturers handles. They break about 90 percent of the time under the weight of a large mattress.

Mattresses can also be folded in half by cutting mid-way and folding, and then tying the ends together with rope. A mattress bundled in this manner is easier to move ove long distances, but difficult to move through a doorway.

Always clear a large, wide path to the exit before moving a mattress or other large furnishings. The odds are that something will get smashed if it is anywhere near the movement area.
